Designer Terrariums @ Fleurty Studio

Fleurty proudly carries Green Under Glass a collection of little living pieces of art designed by artist Kat Geiger. She began creating terrariums and other indoor landscaping after moving to an apartment with no outdoor space in 2001. The rest, as they say is history. Almost three years later, her terrarium studio has exploded and earned its very own title, "Green Under Glass."
"I kill all my plants." At Fleurty we hear this confession time and time again from our customers. Usually paired with a look of defeat, they admit to sunlight over exposure, or under watering or drowning the plants that they previously owned. This is why a terrarium is a wonderful baby step towards feeling like you've got a green thumb...or maybe a light green pinky.

Perfect for a cubicle space these little creations, many of which are made in recycled bottles, are easy to care for. Most just need a spritz of water once a week or once a month. The easiest type only requires that you keep moss hydrated. Everyone can enjoy a little Green Under Glass!

Highschool Prom Buying Guide

It's Prom time and everything is set! Hot date, perfect dress, transportation secured, and now... Flowers? This is a fairly new experience for most, so here are some easy tips to getting the most unique and fashionable prom florals.

The Corsage:

What color dress is she wearing? The corsage flowers do not have to match the dress shade exactly but should coordinate nicely with the color. If you don't know the color of the dress, don't default to a white corsage. White corsages rarely show detail in pictures, wear out faster than other flower colors, and dilute color...as opposed to ENHANCING color. Try a corsage with multiple colors!

What style is the dress? Clubby & Hot, Romantic & Soft, or maybe Dark & Sophisticated? This information helps the designer choose what sort of ribbon and greenery to add to the corsage. Often times it's the floral "Supporting Cast Members" that make the biggest difference from your red rose corsage and the other red rose corsage that your friend is wearing.

The Boutonniere:

What handsome color ensemble is he wearing? If he's wearing a black tux, opt for a ribbon that will stand out against it. As for the flower, try and see if you can coordinate the flowers for the boutonniere with the flowers in the corsage. This makes for a more cohesive look and everyone will know who you walked in with ;)

How can you "pimp" it out? If your dress is printed with animal patterns, polka dots, or piped trim...tell your designer! It's always possible to add an additional pop to the boutonniere that makes it your own!

Time for the Big Night!

It's best to order at least a week beforehand. Tell your designer what is the most important thing to you...flowers that dry nicely, smell delicious, match your eye shadow? Trust your floral designer to know what flowers will hold up the best throughout all the dancing, chest-bumping, and after party dessert shoveling.

Fleurty Color & Themes

On our website you may have noticed that some of the arrangements such as the "Lush 'n' Low" have the option to customize the design with these 4 color stories. Here we describe what each option means.

Deep & Dark - A sexy arrangement that is often described as naughty, mysterious, and unexpected. These juicy creations often use: Bordeaux, aubergine, black, chocolate brown, and indigo colors. You may find textures that resemble feathers, velvet, or patent leather. Flowers used in this type of color scheme could be Black Magic Roses, Red Celosia, Dark Succulents, and Purple Calla Lily's. This arrangement is not for the faint of heart. Wink~

Bright & Bold - Flowers that make you wanna do the rhumba, samba, and the cha cha cha! High intensity colors with fun combinations: Hot fuchsia, tangerine, kiwi green, and pops of bright sunny yellow. Tropical influences are commonly used in these designs. Stylish ti leaves, asiatic lily's, bright tulips, two toned dahlias, and orchids are often guests to this party! Do send this mini-vacation in a vase to that firecracker in your life.

Simply White - Clean, clear, sophisticated, and timeless. Exquisite in any interior setting. White can be more silvery and bright or creamy ivory with vintage touches. Glamorous casablanca lily's, avalanche roses, seeded eucalyptus, winterberries, and hyacinth become a symphony of scents. A gift from the heart and a true celebration of life.

Pretty Pastels - Spring time day dreams with an extra lump of sugar! This is the most feminine of all the color palettes: Soft pinks, custard yellows, baby blue, and lavender. Often designed with a more garden, puffy, trailing romantic feel. You may find dainty sweet peas, periwinkle delphinium, hydrangeas, and creme de la creme roses in these pieces. Great for the arrival of a new baby or just for the sweetest girl in the whole wide world.

April 25th Orchidscape Workshop Benefitting Furry Friends Rescue!

With the grim state of our economy, charity donations are down across the board and displaced pets are a result of mass foreclosures.

I think about my mutt, Kuma. He was 1 yrs old when the shelter scheduled to euthanize him. Kuma was rescued by a second chance organization and because Fleurty is pet-crazy, we wanted to find a way to help out other animals in need.

What can Fleurty Studio do to help? On Saturday April 25th 2009, Fleurty is holding a Fleurty Orchidscape Workshop and 75% of the proceeds will benefit Furry Friends Rescue. An Orchidscape is a highly stylized environment where a blooming orchid plant is the focal feature. A great addition to any home and a wonderful gift to give! Learn how to properly layout your design, use various live and dried floral enhancements, and get useful tips on orchid care.
Fleurty will provide the tools and materials and you will get to take home your creation and feel great knowing that you helped the lives of animals in need. Sign up early, space is limited! Classes 12:30 - 2:30 pm or 3:00 - 5:00 pm.

Spruce Up Your Office Space! (Green Thumb not required)

Just because you may have had trouble keeping plants alive in the past, does not mean you’re destined to a dull and dusty office. Success with office plants is all about finding the right match and if you are busy and forgetful, we recommend these three beauties that seem to enjoy a bit of abuse:

1. Zamioculcus Zamiifolia: try saying that three times fast….or just do what normal people do and call it the “ZZ” or “Eternity plant.” This plant can take a great deal of abuse, requires virtually no light and can go long periods without water. It resembles a prehistoric palm with broad shiny green leaflets. Combined with the right container its dramatic architectural lines can add interest to any desktop or corner…it’s easy, eye-catching and definitely not your grandma’s spider plant.

2. Bromeliads: looking for a flower that doesn’t die? These funky epiphytes are probably as close as you can get. Sun loving members the Pineapple family these low maintenance Rosettes boast a variety of striking colors and flower shapes. They prefer direct sunlight but still perform fairly well under fluorescents. The best part is that they hold the water in the center of their leaves so you can see when they need to be refilled….no guess work takes low-maintenance to a new level.

3. Orchids: Many new orchid cultivars on the market are much hardier and cheaper than their predecessors and when combined with unique containers and accessories can transform any boring desktop into a dramatic “Orchidscape.” Their flowers, depending on the species, can last up to a month and with their affordability makes them easily replaceable allowing for everchanging year-round color and interest.
